About Us

Dear College Football Fan,

Because we know you have an interest in the great history of college football, we thought you might be interested in hearing about the College Football Historical Society.

The College Football Historical Society (CFHS) is a hobby group which was organized in April of 1987 with the intention of promoting several objectives. The major goals of CFHS are to:

1) stimulate and encourage serious research and study of college football’s history;

2) to serve as a vehicle for putting researchers in touch with others of similar interests;

3) to provide an outlet for the publication of appropriate research articles by the members.

The College Football Historical Society has a nationwide membership which, through the years, has included some of the top college football historians and authors in the country. Of course, being an “expert” on college football history is NOT a requirement for membership, nor is it required that you write articles for our publication. All that is needed is a love for the great game of college football and its storied past.

The members of the Society receive the CFHS Journal, which is published four times yearly, with the issues dated February, May, August, and November. Each issue is 16 pages, jam-packed with college football history from different eras of the game’s past. In our over 30 years of existence since 1987 the Society has published over 2,000 pages of material on college football history, researched and written by the membership. Every issue carries articles on great teams or players from the past, frequent book reviews, and letters from members.

A sampling from over the years of some topics we have presented in CFHS includes the Carlisle Indians with Jim Thorpe, Ollie Matson, the great 1928 and 1931 Southern Cal teams, Fordham of New York City, the great Army teams of Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard, Walter Eckersall and the University of Chicago, the Galloping Gaels of St Mary’s; and many of the great teams from the Big Ten Conference, the old Southwest Conference, and the powerhouse teams from what is now the Southeast Conference; and much, much more.

Memberships in the College Football Historical Society are open at any time, and if you would like to join us and see the CFHS quarterly journal, a check or money order in the amount of $19.00 for your first year’s dues (which includes four issues of the Journal) should be made payable to “Ray Schmidt” and sent to:

Ray Schmidt P. O. BOX 6460 Ventura, Cal. 93006

NOTE: For all new members just joining, they will receive a bonus fifth issue of our Journal for their first year of membership.
